Which subwoofers are available?

Active subwoofers

Here, the amplifier is usually integrated directly into a small housing. It is also matched to the active subwoofer, so only the power supply and signal need to be connected. This means that there is no need to install a separate power amplifier.

Mounted under the seat, they are usually not bass monsters. They are ideal for supporting a front system in the bass range so that everything sounds harmonious.

Subwoofers in the enclosure

There are three different types of enclosure with different characteristics:

Closed enclosure (for purists): In closed enclosures, the sound character of the bass tends to be dry as dust and precise. The closed volume compresses the volume and controls the woofer cleanly, but this also requires a more powerful power amplifier. The enclosures are always smaller than those of bass reflex or bandpass speakers.

Bass reflex (for sound lovers and pressure): The fact that a bass reflex tube is integrated in this design makes it possible to determine a resonance frequency so that the level can increase in the lower bass range without the woofer having to deflect. The cabinet resonates! Bass reflex subwoofers play very voluminously even with relatively little power.

Band-pass enclosure (loud, with moderate precision): This enclosure principle is now only very rarely offered and installed, as the sound is rather unclean and spongy in most cases. On the other hand, the bass pressure is very high. Due to their design (the subwoofer disappears into the enclosure and the bass only comes out through the bass reflex tube), these enclosures are not very popular.

Expert tip: Our enclosure recommendation for your car...

...is clearly a closed enclosure! This will always give you the cleanest bass in the interior of the vehicle and you need less space than with the large bass reflex enclosures and bandpass speakers. However, you must be aware that you should not skimp on the quality of the power amplifier in closed cabinet applications, as using the subwoofer in a closed cabinet also requires a little more controlled power. If you don't mind sacrificing space in the trunk, then we also recommend the bass reflex woofer. Bass reflex speakers have good efficiency.

We only recommend bandpass enclosures if you want to achieve a lot of sound pressure with as little effort as possible. With most band-pass woofers, the sound falls by the wayside, as the sound is no longer differentiated, but is usually washed out and all the different kick basses or beat drums or deep basses sound more or less the same.

Spare wheel woofers

These spare wheel woofers are designed to fit in the spare wheel well so that they do not waste valuable space in the trunk. You can produce some serious bass with these woofers. There are active spare wheel woofers with a built-in power amplifier and also spare wheel woofers for operation with a powerful external power amplifier. Due to their design, they can be placed under the floor mat in the recess. The only thing to check here is whether the diameter is suitable for the spare wheel subwoofer and whether the height is compatible with the floor pan.
